Prepositions

Definition : Prepositions are abstract words that have no concrete meaning. They are words which show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun object and some other words in the sentence. They are always followed by nouns or pronouns. They are called "the biggest little words” in English because they have very important functions. Examples:

At home - Before Tuesday - In London - On the table - With pleasure.

Prepositions are classified as simple or compound.

1. Simple Prepositions: Single word prepositions. These are all showed above, example: the book is on the table.

2. Compound Prepositions: Are more than one word. In between and because of are prepositions made up of two words - in front of, for example: The book is in front of the clock.
