Tutorial 1- Local Area Network

Exercise 01

1-     Define the following words :

Network, Internet, OSI, ISO, LAN, WAN, MAN, Ethernet, Modem, TCP/IP, Server, client.
2-     What is the difference between local Area Network and Wide Area Network ?
3-      Consider a network using the CSMA/CD access technique such as standard Ethernet
(speed = 10 Mbits/s, propagation time = 200,000 km/s) whose configuration is as follows(distance AB=BC=CD=500m).
What would happen if there was no stopper or terminator?

4-     What is the difference between Hub and switch ?
5-     What is the role of the router ?
6-     In a local network made up of four stations, what are the consequences, depending on the
topology used, of a loss of support between stations 3 and 4 if the server is located on station 2.
7-     What is the format of the MAC address and the meaning of each field?

Exercice02 :

A company connects 4 stations on an Ethernet segment with the following configuration.

Station
IP adress
Netmask
A
150.150.1.28
255.255.254.0
B
150.150.1.57
255.255.255.0
C
150.150.2.28
255.255.252.0
D
150.150.2.57
255.255.254.0

No machine is configured as a router on the segment. Users complain about not being able to
communicate with each other.
Explain which ones and why? What should be changed in the current configuration?
